Friday night
On the east side, the lights still mean the Bulldogs
New Haven High School does not need this paper to invent a final. The town already knows what a Friday is for.
By the time the lights come on at New Haven High School, Broadway has already voted. Some Fridays the vote is football. The Bulldogs play for the east side of Allen County, in the East Allen County Schools, and the heritage edition will not counterfeit a score to fill a column.
What the column can say is older than any one game. A railroad town measures the week by whistles and by kickoffs. The crossing holds a freight. The gate holds a crowd. Both are a way of saying the same thing: stay where you are for a minute. The town is doing something.
Parents park where they parked. The Lincoln Highway keeps going, because highways do not care about the third quarter. The people who stay do. That is the whole sports section, and it is enough.
