The Road
The Lincoln Highway still leaves town toward Besançon
East of the crossing, the old national road runs out to a French settlement and a church on the National Register.
The Lincoln Highway does not end its business at the city limits. On the eastern edge it runs through Besançon, the French settlement, where St. Louis Catholic Church stands on the National Register of Historic Places.
Swiss Amish families came into this country in the 1850s and kept an Alsatian German the rest of Indiana does not speak. The road east of New Haven is a stack of those arrivals: canal, rail, highway, parish. A person on a bicycle now uses the same points of the compass the freight trains used, which is as much sport as this page requires.
If you are going, go in the daylight. The crossing at the railroad is not a suggestion. It never was.
